Aguilas

Just 15 minutes down the road from Lorca is the thriving seaside town of Aguilas. Its very Spanish, with a large marina and long safe beach. Overlooking the marina entrance is a rather fetching statue of Icarus. It makes our ’Fighting Stick Insects’ sculpture seem rather tame by comparison! The beach is very safe and the restaurants are varied and handy for that lunch time ’menu del dia’. Lovely!

Aquilas is a popular spot as the beaches are plentiful. The town itself is lucky to have escaped the worst excesses of tourism, retaining much of its rural charm and character. It also boasts a superb year-round climate! Carnaval is especially interesting. It lasts for ten days and nights in February. The floats and general fancy-dress mayhem is a sight to behold! They even have a drag queen contest. Get in early to grab a seat!
