Puerto Lumbreras

Puerto Lumbreras, our nearest town, has a good friday market and medical centre, shops and a few interesting sites. The primary interest is in the area of Castle Nogalte and the newly refurbished attraction of the cave houses. The castle is not very impressive but is medieval, built in the C12 and C13, whose strategic location at the confluence of the Rambla de Nogalte and Guadalentin Valley, allowed control over the route between the Levante to Andalucia. The Casas Cuevas are situated by the castle, these types of rock habitat are characteristic of various regions of Spain over the centuries. An interesting pathway now guides visitors around these and if you are lucky you may be able to see inside the cave houses which have a fascinating insight into the past.

La Rambla de Nogalte (dry river bed) usually serves as parking, the river long gone. However in September when the fiesta is going on you can see a fantastic firework display. Beneath the Rambla is one of the largest underground water channels in the region, it’s origins are the mountains around Velez Rubio. To the west of the town is the highest mountain in the municipality and certainly one of the highest in the Region of Murcia. Cabezo de la Jara reaches 1,242 metres above sea level and is the backdrop to our views at Almond Tree Villa. Of course it might be best to view this mountain from our pool with a glass of cava rather than cycling up it!
