Indalo
Velez Rubio is about 20 minutes from Almond Tree Villa and has a magnificent Barogue church (the largest in Almeria Province), La Encarnacion. It has an imposing carved facade and a superbly detailed, 20 metre high carved wood altar (retablo).
Some 4 km out of Velez Rubio, on the route to Velez Blanco are the famous cave paintings of the Cueva de los Letreros. The cave or abrigo (rock shelter) has remarkably fresh-looking red and brown sketches of human figures, birds, animals, astonomical signs and not very well preserved indalos which have been dated to around 5000BC and are amongst some of the oldest representations of people and animals together.
Not to be missed is Velez Blanco itself. The Castillo dominates the skyline but the small winding streets and superb public water fountain are well worth a visit.
